Hanwha Aerospace Wins $922m Chunmoo MRLS Contract with Norway

  Hanwha Aerospace has signed a contract with the Norwegian Defence Material Agency (NDMA) to supply the Chunmoo Multiple Rocket Launcher System (MRLS) to the Norwegian Armed Forces, marking the company’s first major defence contract of 2026. While Norway’s overall long-term acquisition programme is budgeted at approximately US$2 billion, the specific agreement for the Chunmoo system is valued at around US$922 million. Under the contract, Hanwha Aerospace will deliver 16 Chunmoo launch vehicles, a precision-guided missile package, and Integrated Logistics Support (ILS). The contract was formally signed in Oslo by Jae-il Son, President and CEO of Hanwha Aerospace, and Gro Jære, Director General of NDMA. The ceremony was attended by senior officials from both countries, including Hoon-sik Kang, Chief of Staff to the President of the Republic of Korea; Hyun-jong Kim, First Deputy Director of National Security; Min-jung Seo, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Norway; Yong-chul Lee, Minister of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration; Marte Gerhardsen, State Secretary of Norway; and Major General Lars Lervik, Chief of the Norwegian Army. The selection of the Chunmoo system follows nearly a decade of operational cooperation between Hanwha Aerospace and the Norwegian Armed Forces. Since the 2017 contract for 52 K9 VIDAR self-propelled howitzers and 14 K10 Ammunition Resupply Vehicles, Hanwha Aerospace has delivered all systems on schedule. The proven performance, sustainment model and logistics framework of the K9 fleet were cited as key technical references in Norway’s evaluation of the Chunmoo MRLS. For Norwegian requirements, the Chunmoo system has been optimised for Arctic operations, ensuring reliability in extreme cold temperatures and challenging snowy terrain. The system is also designed to be fully interoperable with Norway’s existing defence infrastructure and fire control systems, enhancing joint and allied operational effectiveness. With this agreement, the global operator base of the Chunmoo MRLS now includes the Republic of Korea, Poland, Estonia, Norway and customers in the Middle East. This growing user community is expected to improve interoperability and shared efficiencies in integrated logistics support across allied forces. Hanwha Aerospace also confirmed plans to further strengthen cooperation with Norwegian industry, including potential joint development initiatives and local testing activities, reinforcing industrial participation and long-term sustainment.
