Japan names Taigei-class submarine ‘Chōgei’

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries held a naming and launching ceremony for a 3,000-ton submarine for the Ministry of Defense at its Kobe Shipyard (Hyogo-ku, Kobe) recently. This ceremony follows the naming and launching ceremony for the third ship of the same class, “Jingei,” held in October 2022. The new submarine is the fifth of the Taigei-class submarine, a successor to the Soryu-class flagships of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, and has been named Chogei. After outfitting work on the hull, engine, electrical equipment, and weapons is completed, the submarine is scheduled to be handed over to the Ministry of Defense during fiscal year 2025.
