Nova Systems hosts visiting research fellow

Virtual-augmented reality research scientist Professor Rob Lindeman is in Adelaide in June for the first Nova Systems Visiting Fellowship at the University of South Australia (UniSA).  The director of the Human Interface Technology Lab New Zealand at the University of Canterbury will be working with UniSA’s Australian Research Centre for Interactive and Virtual Environments (IVE) this month.  His visit follows Nova Systems Chief Executive Officer Jim McDowell and University of South Australia Vice Chancellor Professor David Lloyd signing a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) last year. The MoU focuses on research and development to grow the pipeline of future engineers through industry and academic exchanges in emerging technology areas, with a particular emphasis on defence, national security and space.  “Professor Lindeman is a world-leading virtual-augmented reality research scientist in interaction techniques for immersive virtual environments,” McDowell said. “Collaboration with academia regarding synthetic environments is an important aspect for Nova Systems to ensure our systems assurance capabilities continue to evolve.” Prof Lindeman and IVE Director Bruce Thomas will attend a Nova Systems workshop to investigate applications of complex systems Test & Evaluation (T&E) in synthetic environments with a view to helping Nova Systems further advance its T&E capabilities. “This workshop will help identify avenues for further research collaboration between Nova Systems and UniSA’s IVE aligned with Nova Systems’ synthetic environment aspirations,” McDowell said.  A second Nova Systems visiting fellow will be announced later this year.  “By working with academia as a part of the broader defence ecosystem, Nova Systems helps to foster the future defence industry workforce and in particular the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields which are critical to defence capability,” McDowell said. “Contributing to the academic space that we operate in is incredibly valuable to us. It sits perfectly with our position as a leading engineering and technology solutions provider – and our support underlines the value of this collaboration. We encourage the meeting of smart minds to find solutions.”  Nova Systems’ investment in research and development is significant for a former smaller enterprise that has grown to be a mid-tier Australian owned and controlled entity, having spent $17 million over the past five years.
