US Marines head home after six months in Top End

After six months of training, the 15th iteration of Marine Rotational Force-Darwin (MRF-D) is returning home. Since March, approximately 2,000 United States Marines and sailors have participated in training, exercises and engagement activities in Australia and the Indo-Pacific. MRF-D participation in exercises such as Balikatan, Pitch Black, Predators Run and Southern Jackaroo highlight our collective preparedness, enhanced interoperability and the strengthening military cooperation between Australia, the United Sates and regional partners. MRF-D also participated in Exercise Capital Reach, which concluded with an amphibious disembarkation from the Royal Australian Navy Landing Helicopter Dock HMAS Canberra. In addition to training activities, MRF-D supported Operation Render Safe, which contributes to collective regional security through the safe disposal of explosive remnants of war. Since the first iteration in 2012, the annual six-month rotational deployment has grown significantly in capability, complexity and regional reach. The United States Marine Corps (USMC) will return to the Northern Territory in early 2027 for the 16th MRF-D rotation, as part of the United States Force Posture Initiatives. Commander Joint Operations Command Vice Admiral Justin Jones said: “The 2026 Marine Rotational Force-Darwin rotation has delivered tangible operational outcomes, enhancing the readiness of our people and strengthening our ability to integrate with the United States and regional partners. Training across Northern Australia and the Indo-Pacific has challenged our people to operate together in complex, austere and demanding environments, building the capability, resilience and integration required to respond to crises, deter potential adversaries and contribute to regional stability when called upon.” Commanding Officer Marine Rotational Force-Darwin 2026 Colonel George Flynn said: “This 15th rotation stands as a testament to what the United States and Australia can achieve when we train shoulder-to-shoulder. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to our ADF counterparts and our hosts across the country for their unwavering support. By pushing our limits together during exercises like Render Safe, Predators Run, Southern Jackaroo, and Capital Reach, we have learned immensely from one another. We have forged an unparalleled level of interoperability, proving that we can move together rapidly and effectively to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific.” Commanding Officer Headquarters Northern Command Group Captain Melissa Neilson said: “The enduring success of MRF-D reflects our shared commitment to regional security, stability and cooperation. The strong relationships we have working alongside the Marines at all levels consistently provides opportunities to maximise integration of forces and capabilities. Each year integration improves, as demonstrated this year on HMAS Canberra during Capital Reach. Our Marine friends immerse themselves in our culture while they are here, supporting local community events and charities, and this year learnt Aussie rules football during cultural festivals in small Indigenous communities.” For Editorial Inquiries Contact: Editor Kym Bergmann at [email protected] For Advertising Inquiries Contact: Group Sales Director Simon Hadfield at [email protected]
