Thales delivers new ASLAV trainers to Australia’s Defence Materiel Organisation

Thales has successfully delivered nine new Australian Light Armoured Vehicle (ASLAV) Crew Procedural Trainers (CPTs) to the Defence Materiel Organisation. The delivery follows a previous contract for nine CPTs that were first delivered in 2006 as part of LAND 112 and which play a central role in Australia’s ASLAV program.

Chris Jenkins, Thales Australia CEO, said: “We have worked very closely with the Defence Materiel Organisation, the Australian Defence Force, and key suppliers Thomas Electronics and Varley to successfully deliver the ASLAV CPTs on time and on budget.”

“These additional Crew Trainers significantly enhance the Army’s operational training capability, and are a great example of what Australian industry can achieve.”

The ASLAV CPTs are highly accurate synthetic training devices that provide a realistic training environment for ASLAV crews, reducing the requirement to train with live ammunition in actual vehicles. Each CPT replicates the ASLAV-25 turret for the Commander and Gunner, including high fidelity reproductions of all weapon and sighting systems.

The CPTs support training of all gun drills and firing techniques at both the technical and tactical training level. Individual simulators can be linked together to provide distributed training up to platoon level in a virtual battlespace.

Each CPT is housed within a six-metre purpose-built ISO container which can be shipped by land, sea and air to support troop deployments.

Since 2006, the CPTs have enabled significant cost savings by delivering over 55,000 hours of operation with a training availability of greater than 99%.

The 18 ASLAV CPTs are located at four Army bases including the School of Armour, Puckapunyal, and at all ASLAV Regiments in Australia.
