This World Environment Day (5 June), Defence is recognising its significant role in contributing to Australia’s emissions reduction target of 43 per cent by 2030 and Net Zero by 2050, through impactful projects across the Defence estate. The initiatives range from energy resilience with large solar farms and the upgrade of lighting and heating systems, to recycling uniforms and tyres into new materials.
- Establishing energy resilience for northern bases with the Defence estate’s largest combined solar farm at NT’s RAAF Base Darwin and Robertson Barracks.
- LED upgrades across the Defence estate have reduced lighting power use by 90%.
- Heat Pump upgrades have increased Living-In-Accommodation hot water supplies while minimising costs and carbon emissions.
- Repurposing tyres into sustainable and durable concrete at RAAF Base East Sale.
- HMAS Kuttabul repurposes Wharf Fenders and lines for the enrichment of Taronga Zoo’s animals.
- Camouflage uniforms recycled into raw textiles for furnishings, construction industries and use as biofuel.
