The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Aerospace Security Project has released a new report, The Evolution of French Space Security.
This report highlights France’s steadfast desire for independent capabilities that can rival those of major historic space powers, claiming that France stands apart from other European nations—such as Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom—in space security. French president Emmanuel Macron’s interest in space paired with what France considered to be Russian interference with a key military satellite propelled it to the top of the country’s military priorities.
France, unlike others competing in the space domain, is speaking openly and candidly about its overarching goals in space—and expects to be taken at its word. The report suggests this transparency around specific defensive capabilities and military plans and postures in space may be one of the greatest differences between the French and U.S. approaches to space policy.
