Following the launch of a nationwide “Call for Innovation” in February, seeking SMEs and academia from the Australian aerospace sector to submit proposals in key technology areas, Airbus has received an overwhelming level of interest from the local industry. The first phase of the innovation call concluded with a total of 82 submissions, spanning areas such as new space, spacecraft electrical systems, quantum technologies, cyber security, prognostics, and real-time intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. Thirty-one pitches have been shortlisted for the next phase, where Airbus will engage in deeper discussions with the participating companies on their proposals.
Sascha Hapke, head of Australasia for Airbus Defence and Space, said “We are very encouraged by the strong level of interest from the Australian industry. These submissions are testament to the extensive innovation and research capabilities in the Pacific region, with many great proposals coming from various states and territories in Australia and New Zealand. This open innovation drive is an important step to initiate deeper exchanges with the Australian stakeholders, as we endeavour to develop a sustainable sovereign space and defence ecosystem,” he added.
Airbus is committed to building its links and cooperation with defence and security businesses across Australia for military satcom technology and services, to build and deliver sovereign capability and innovation, supporting the growth of Australia’s sovereign space capability. In 2020, Airbus formed Team Maier to substantially increase sovereign industrial space and defence capability in Australia. Through this collaborative approach, Airbus seeks partnerships with key Australian space and technology companies and academia, to launch a sustainable solution in response to Australia’s JP9102 programme.
