Defence industry capability showcased at AWD launch

The Australian defence industry is today celebrating the launch of the second air warfare destroyer, representing an important achievement for industry and a considerable new asset for Defence.

Australian Made Defence spokesperson, Margot Forster said the launch of the AWD was a significant milestone and highlights the ability of industry to deliver key capabilities for Australia’s Defence Force.

“Programs such as the Air Warfare Destroyer help to showcase the incredibly high-level skills and capacity of our local industry,” said Ms Forster.

“This ship was constructed in South Australia, but a national supply chain was key to delivering outcomes for the Defence Force. This is truly a national effort and should be celebrated as a national achievement.

“The main priority for industry is to deliver the best capability for Defence: this project does just that.

“There were also considerable productivity improvements made during the construction of this second AWD, highlighting yet another advantage of maintaining and developing our indigenous shipbuilding capability.

“Innovation is the best way for industry to develop the skills and knowledge to be become globally competitive, delivering the best results for Defence and the taxpayer.

“The Federal Government has made a number of significant announcements on Australian naval shipbuilding this year, as a result, industry can now focus on planning and investing in the right skills, technologies and capabilities to deliver other considerable programs for our nation,” said Ms Forster.
