QinetiQ Australia announced the appointment of Rear Admiral Ian Murray AM (retired) to its Advisory Board. Rear Admiral Murray brings extensive experience from across the Australian Defence Force (ADF) following a distinguished 40-year career. He held a number of senior leadership appointments, including Head of the Australian Defence Staff and Defence Attache in Washington DC, Acting Chief of Joint Capabilities and Commander Joint Logistics.
As a senior Defence leader, Rear Admiral Murray delivered major capability and logistics initiatives across Defence and ensured support to Defence operations in Australia and overseas. Most recently he was on the frontline of strengthening Australia’s defence partnership with the United States, with a particular focus on AUKUS implementation, export control reform and supporting Australian defence industry. Since retiring from the ADF, Rear Admiral Murray has continued to support Australia’s defence and national security sector through a range of advisory and governance roles.
Murray said: “QinetiQ Australia has established a strong reputation for delivering trusted engineering, test and evaluation and mission solutions that strengthen Defence capability. I’m excited to work with the Advisory Board and Leadership Team to support the company’s continued growth and its contribution to Australia’s sovereign defence capability, particularly in the maritime domain.”

Set up in September 2024, the Advisory Board serves as an external, independent, voice representing QinetiQ’s capabilities within the defence industry, government, and related areas. Mr Murray, along with Board members Tony Fraser AO, CSC and Margaret Staib AM, CSC, and Stephen Loosley AM, provide strategic advice and analysis to support QinetiQ’s growth and the company’s ongoing delivery of advanced test and evaluation, engineering and mission-critical services to the Australian Defence Force and national security partners.
