ABC’s Chris Bath sits down with APDR Editor Kym Bergmann as the two discuss the preparedness of the Australian Defence Force in light of the Chinese Navy conducting live-fire drills in the Tasman Sea. Clearly, the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in particular is under-prepared – and Bergmann says Australia can expect many more of these visits in the future and that the only mature approach is to start talking about an increase in the Australian defence budget.

  1. A difficult job, done well with this interview.

The Guardian ran an editorial piece written by Zoe Daniel asking questions about Australia’s key strategic assumptions. There is a distinct lack of honesty and a willingness to debate policy alternatives in this space and it is left to the cross bench and independent commentators to do much of the heavy lifting.

  2. Guessing here…maybe he means our army thinks it’s as tough as a boot when in fact it’s more like a double plugged flip flop.

  3. The one really disturbing piece of news ( most of what you covered has been covered before) is the Prime Ministers assumption we have a treaty with the U.S. that guarantees support if we are attacked. ANZUS offers no such guarantees it simply says that the U.S. will consult with Australia and New Zealand, nothing more. It seems our Prime Minister haven’t even read it.
