https://www.ga-asi.com/remotely-piloted-aircraft/mq-9b-seaguardianChina’s recent deployment of a carrier strike group in the Taiwan Strait, led by the aircraft carrier Shandong, underscores its resolve to employ military strength in asserting regional claims. Despite being trailed by warships from the US, Japan, and Taiwan, Shandong persisted in navigating the Taiwan Strait, revealing China’s unwillingness to compromise its regional dominance, even amidst the recent diplomatic efforts to normalize relations with the US, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s latest report, “Naval Vessels and Surface Combatants Market Size and Trend Analysis by Segments, Programs, Competitive Landscape and Forecast to 2033,” reveals that China is expected to spend about $51 billion on procuring various categories of naval vessels and surface combatants over the next 10 years. Out of which, 28% will be directed towards the aircraft carrier segment.

Rithik Rao, Aerospace & Defense Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “China also seeks to operate a fleet of at least six aircraft carriers in the long-run. The third aircraft carrier, Fujian, which is presently under construction, is expected to be the most advanced carrier deployed by any country other than the US, featuring the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS). This will significantly reduce the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s (PLAN) technological gap with the US Navy, which is the only other service in the world to have deployed EMALS.

“As China embarks on reinforcing its dominance in the South China Sea and the overall Indo-Pacific and takes steps to implement the controversial One-China policy, the country’s policymakers will continue to direct investments in the naval domain to attain technological parity with its primary rival, the US, and its allies. As such, it will also not be surprising to see more deployments and drills in the contested waters by the PLAN carrier strike group in the future.”
