Civmec announced that Sam Webb will join the organisation as the new government relations manager and will establish a new office in Canberra. The appointment strengthens Civmec’s defence team as the company expands its naval shipbuilding portfolio.
Webb brings extensive experience in defence and government relations following a sixteen- year career in national security with the UK Government, including roles in Australia, Afghanistan and Pakistan. He previously served as the UK Government’s head of defence industry partnerships at the British High Commission in Canberra and had a leading role in deepening the defence capability relationship between the UK and Australia.
This appointment, and the forthcoming opening of a new office in Canberra are the next chapter for Civmec as it looks to expand its defence capabilities. A highly proven and competitive organisation, Civmec believes it will bring real value for the Commonwealth in delivering continuous naval shipbuilding.
This unwavering focus on naval shipbuilding follows the October signing of a non-binding Heads of Agreement for the change of ownership and control of Luerssen Australia. This agreement will ensure uninterrupted design and delivery of six Arafura Class Offshore Patrol Vessels for the Royal Australian Navy and will provide ongoing employment opportunities for the SEA1180 workforce. The transfer of ownership is subject to approval by the Commonwealth and satisfactory completion of due diligence and other Conditions Precedent.
Civmec continues to work closely with the Commonwealth and the Western Australian State Government to support the new Defence Precinct at the Henderson shipyard. This nation building enterprise will deliver critical infrastructure for the Royal Australian Navy and its allies while protecting the vital work the precinct delivers for other sectors.
Civmec’s General Manager Defence, Mark Clay, said: “I am delighted that Sam is joining Civmec as we expand our naval shipbuilding capabilities and leverage our significant steel manufacturing experience to deliver for the Commonwealth. His breadth of knowledge and conviction will help to strengthen our trusted partnerships across Government and industry and underline Civmec’s commitment to Australia’s national security.”
Webb said: “I am excited by the opportunity to join Civmec. Australia faces a period of increasing competition and securing our national security requires an enterprise approach between Government and industry. Civmec are committed to this approach, and I look forward to building on the established partnerships between Civmec, the Commonwealth and state governments.”
