DEWC Services has been awarded the Defence Teaming Centre’s (DTC) 2023 Skilling Award at the recent Defence Industry Dinner & Awards Ceremony in Adelaide. A veteran owned and operated company DEWC Services’ discriminator is their people. Recognising the challenges faced by Australia’s defence industry regarding workforce size and availability DEWC strategically designed and implemented multiple different training programs which has resulted in more than 20 university graduates receiving more targeted training which aligns with the requirements of the Australian Defence Force (ADF).
DTC CEO Libby Day said the Skilling Award was new to the Award line up but very relevant considering the industry’s current skilled workforce shortage. “We were impressed by the high calibre of applications, and on behalf of the DTC I would like to congratulate this year’s winners and thank all finalists and nominees who entered this year,” Libby said. “This is the first year we have had a Skilling Award, and it is great to see so many companies investing in their people and implementing programs to address the workforce challenges. The DTC Awards are all about celebrating the incredible business talents we have in the defence industry, and we are proud to be able to recognise these talents in front of our members, government and Defence officials and the wider defence community. Every company that submitted a nomination has made a positive contribution to the sector. As we celebrate the award winners lets also recognise the impact our award finalists and nominees have had on building our countries reputation as a reputable supplier of products and services.”
This year, the DTC Chair Award was renamed to the Tony Martin Defence Industry Achievement Award to pay tribute to the late Tony Martin and honour one of the great advocates of Australia’s defence industry. “Tony was larger than life and a proud advocate of the defence industry,” Mike Hartas, Chair of the DTC Board said. “It is fitting that we acknowledge his contribution by naming this award in his honour. Recipients of this award are recognised for their significant achievements and contributions to defence industry. They are trailblazers who have a genuine passion for our sector, have gone above and beyond and serve as inspiring role models. It was an honour to award Jim Whalley the first Tony Martin Defence Industry Achievement Award. He has championed the growth of numerous businesses here in South Australia, Jim epitomizes the very essence of what this award represents.”
Whalley, who is the Chair and Executive Director at Nova Systems, was chosen as the recipient of the award for his pivotal contributions to the defence industry. As a former pilot in the Royal Australian Air Force, Jim has gone onto serve as the State’s Chief Entrepreneur, formed Nova Systems, a leading name in Australian Defence, and assisted many businesses through their journey in the defence industry.
