The Northern Territory’s most innovative engineers and engineering projects have been named at the 2025 Engineers Australia Excellence Awards – People and Projects Northern held at the Double Tree by Hilton Darwin overnight.
“The Engineers Australia Excellence Awards honour the outstanding achievements of engineers here in the Northern and the vital contribution their work makes to our community and beyond. By recognising these local leaders, we also inspire the next generation and strengthen the future of our profession,” said Jennifer Jan, General Manager Northern Division.
Local winners will go on to represent their division at the national awards’ gala dinner held at Doltone House, Jones Bay Wharf Sydney on Thursday 13 November.
Northern Project of the Year: HMAS Coonawarra, McConnell Dowell
The HMAS Coonawarra project delivered by McConnell Dowell under a design and construct contract for Laing O’Rourke as Managing Contractor for Defence, involved building a 250 m wharf and two approach jetties designed to cater for Darwin’s cyclonic waves and climate change. The facility enhances the Australian Defence Force’s marine capability and supports the new Arafura Class Offshore Patrol Vessels. The project faced complex challenges including Darwin’s extreme tidal conditions and operational constraints. Innovative in-house temporary works and construction access systems were developed to ensure safe and efficient delivery. High local and Indigenous engagement was achieved. The project was part of the broader Larrakeyah Defence Precinct Redevelopment Program and will provide long-term berthing and support services for Royal Australian Navy vessels with a 100-year design life.
Northern Professional Engineer of the Year: Dr Elisha Harris, Harris Kmon Solutions
Elisha is a PhD-qualified structural engineer with 25-plus years’ experience in design, assessment, project management and teaching. Co-founder of Harris Kmon Solutions, she leads a multidisciplinary firm with more than 55 staff across three states. Complementing her engineering expertise, Elisha holds a Bachelor of Laws and received the Attorney General’s Medal. She serves as Chair or member of multiple boards and committees, driving excellence in engineering practice and governance.
Northern Emerging Professional Engineer of the Year: Samuel Warner, Territory Generation
Sam is a Chartered Civil Engineer and Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control with more than 10 years of experience across diverse project sectors. As a Technical Associate at ADG Engineers, he oversees technical excellence for the Darwin civil team and contributes nationally. Sam specialises in infrastructure, land development and public sector projects, with expertise in contract management, documentation and client service. His designs consistently prioritise efficiency, innovation and quality outcomes for stakeholders across Australia.
