Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the Sea Giraffe 1X radar system to the Swedish navy. The order value is approximately SEK 340 million with deliveries 2024-2026. The order includes Saab’s Sea Giraffe 1X naval radar system in different configurations for training as well as installation on surface ships.
“We are happy to continue to provide the Swedish Navy with modern radar systems. Sea Giraffe 1X will contribute in protecting costal and littoral areas and strengthen the naval units with advanced capabilities to detect, track and classify threats in the air and on the surface,” says Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab’s business area Surveillance.
Sea Giraffe 1X is a radar with ability to simultaneously detect, track and classify objects in the air and on the surface, including drones. The software-defined radar enables updates to meet new threats and is suitable for both smaller and larger ships, as well as autonomous vessels.
Saab to modernise Sweden’s coastal anti-ship missile capability
Saab has signed a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration regarding the modernisation of Sweden’s coastal anti-ship missile capability. The total order value is SEK 800 million and deliveries will begin in 2026. The majority of the order intake was booked in the third quarter of 2024.
The contract includes Saab’s RBS15 Mk3 anti-ship missile integrated on a launcher module installed on a truck. Sweden currently uses the predecessor RBS15 Mk2. The coastal anti-ship missile capability was reintroduced in the Swedish Armed Forces in 2016 and will now be complemented with RBS15 Mk3 on new launcher platforms.
“Sweden will receive a significant capability increase with an anti-ship missile featuring a more advanced target seeker, increased range and a larger warhead. RBS15 is specifically developed for the complex environment and harsh weather conditions of the Baltic Sea,” says Görgen Johansson, head of Saab’s business area Dynamics.
RBS15 Mk3 has a range of over 200 km, can be launched from ships and trucks and is primarily used against naval targets. The system is developed and produced by Saab and its German partner Diehl Defence.
Enhanced capability for Gripen C/D
Saab has received an additional order for the Gripen C/D contract from FMV, valued at SEK 466 million. This extension includes several important updates and studies of upcoming air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles.
“The extension of the Gripen C/D contract marks an important step forward for our defence,” says Lars Tossman, Head of Saab’s Aeronautics business area. “The integration of new advanced missile systems demonstrates our commitment to delivering high-quality solutions. We are proud to contribute to Sweden’s defence capability through this contract.”
The integration of new missile systems significantly improves Gripen C/D’s operational capabilities. This contract extension will serve to ensure that Gripen C/D remains a cornerstone of Sweden’s military capabilities for many years to come.
