Dr Oliver Juckenhöfel, Executive Vice President Surface Vessels at TKMS, said the agreement represents a major milestone for the programme.“The preliminary agreement lays the foundation for the immediate ramp-up of the project. In particular, the agreement enables us to procure materials and begin immediate steelwork at the shipyard.”

€50 Million Initial Work Package

The preliminary agreement covers procurement and preparatory work valued at up to €50 million through to the end of March 2026. The framework includes provisions allowing staged extensions if additional preparatory work is required before the final construction contract is signed.

Despite marking the official programme launch, the agreement does not yet constitute the formal shipbuilding contract. A final decision regarding construction remains pending.

Strategic Importance of the MEKO A-200 DEU Programme

The MEKO A-200 design is part of TKMS’s modular naval shipbuilding family and is intended to deliver advanced multi-role combat capabilities for naval operations. The DEU variant is expected to support Germany’s future maritime defence requirements and strengthen fleet modernisation efforts.

Early preparatory work is considered critical to maintaining delivery timelines and supporting supply chain readiness for complex naval vessel construction.
