The Defence Teaming Centre (DTC) is calling on future aspiring defence leaders to enrol in its 2025 Defence Industry Leadership Program (DILP) and in doing so help give Australia the best chance of not only meeting its AUKUS obligations but leveraging the pact to transform the defence industry.
DILP has been in existence for 14 years with 350 alumni and it is one of the 22 initiatives funded under the South Australian Defence Industry Workforce and Skills Action Plan. The course is open to participants from across Australia, with South Australian applicants benefiting from a government subsidised rate for attendance. Its alumni include representatives of a broad range of organisations from Primes to SME’s and academia. Next year’s course takes place between March and November 2025 on a part-time basis and is co-ordinated and delivered by the DTC in collaboration with registered training provider, SkillsLab, a SAGE Group company. It is designed to nurture and elevate core leadership abilities within the distinctive context of Australia’s defence industry.
With applications closing on 15 December this year, SA Premier Peter Malinauskas has lent his voice to the DTC’s efforts to encourage participants to enrol in the program. “Australia is on the brink of the greatest enhancement of its defence capability through the AUKUS agreement,” explained Premier Malinauskas. If our nation, and especially our state of South Australia, wants to embrace the incredible opportunities presented by AUKUS, preparation must start now. As the Defence State, our industry stands to gain the most from AUKUS and it has the potential to transform our economy if we are smart in our approach. One such initiative that I encourage our defence industry to take advantage of is the Defence Industry Leadership Program (DILP),” added the Premier.
This year, the SA State Government expanded its support for the program to accommodate 40 participants, up from 25 in previous years, to help bridge the workforce and skills gap and ensure industry is ready to meet the new priorities of the Australian Defence Force. The current cohort will graduate on the fourth of December with a nationally recognised Diploma of Leadership and Management.
“I strongly encourage all defence businesses to gain a firm understanding of what DILP offers. DILP’s launch campaign theme this year is Leaders, rise and this is very apt. When opportunities arise, leaders put their hands up,” added Premier Malinauskas.
Through face-to-face workshops, and experiential learning, DILP allows its participants to acquire the skills and knowledge to effectively lead and manage multi-party collaborations and understand the complexity of the defence industry.
The course includes presentations from senior Defence and industry specialists, as well as engaging site visits. This year’s DILP cohort is comprised of participants from diverse backgrounds, from engineering, accounting, communications, business administration, computer science and more.
