Stoker completes sailor recovery

The crew of the RSG Stoker, based at HMAS Stirling, have been recognised for their work last week recovering an injured sailor from the Southern Ocean, some 1800 nautical miles south west of Perth.

The Serco-operated RGS Stoker supported the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and the Royal Australian Navy with an evacuation of a sailor suffering a serious medical condition while participating in the Around the World yacht race. Representatives from AMSA visited the crew on board Stoker yesterday to pass on their thanks for the operation.

The RGS Stoker, a 93 metre submarine rescue vessel, responded to a request for military assistance after the recovery need was identified. The Stoker, its crew of 11 and four Navy medical staff, made the rescue on Tuesday 21 November and arrived back at HMAS Stirling on the morning of Friday 24 November. The sailor was safely transferred to hospital and is recovering.

Managing Director of Serco Defence, Clint Thomas AM CSC, said the operation showed the excellent way that the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, the Royal Australian Navy and Serco were able to actively manage a significant emergency recovery.

“In these situations time is critical. I am very proud of our team’s achievements in mobilising quickly and efficiently to assist a sailor in need,” Mr Thomas said.

“Our crew on board the RGS Stoker worked with the Navy and AMSA to coordinate the Medevac. RGS Stoker made excellent time and with a medical ward on board we were able to safely transfer the sailor to hospital two days earlier than anticipated.

“Thanks to the speedy response, the sailor received the urgent medical attention required. This is a fantastic result and I have personally thanked our crew for their response.”
