After Singapore APDR ShieldAI 728x90 2.20260127151427294Korean Air has successfully tested a 5-meter-wide satellite antenna deployment system that proves Korean Air’s ability to design and manufacture key hardware for future satellites and defence projects.

The testing took place in January at the CAMTIC Advanced Mechatronics Technology Institute for Commercialization (CAMTIC) in Jeonju as part of a project overseen by the Korea Research Institute for Defense Technology Planning and Advancement (KRIT). The test was conducted in collaboration with partners including CAMTIC, StepLab, and Korea Aerospace University.

The primary technical challenge for large-scale satellite antennas is minimising stowed volume within a launch vehicle’s fairing while ensuring high-precision deployment upon reaching target orbit. As surface accuracy in extreme orbital environments directly dictates satellite performance, the mechanical reliability of the deployment system is a critical determinant of mission success.

Korean Air demonstrated that its independently designed mechanism functioned precisely according to its intended kinematic sequence. The system maintained structural integrity and high-precision repeatability across multiple deployment cycles, proving its capacity to preserve the required parabolic shape under extreme thermal and mechanical stresses.

Building on these results, Korean Air is accelerating the development of full-scale antenna systems to support upcoming space programs, including ultra-high-resolution Earth observation and 6G satellite communication networks.

Leveraging its expertise in aerospace R&D and manufacturing, Korean Air is strategically expanding its technical portfolio. The successful development of this core satellite technology positions Korean Air as a key player in the rapidly evolving global space industry.
