Mogami frigate launched in Japan
APDR was fortunate enough to be invited to the launch of the 10th Mogami frigate in Nagasaki, Japan. An upgraded version of the ship is one of three designs being considered for SEA 3000, an order of up to 11 General Purpose Frigates.
Spectacular launch ceremony for 10th Mogami frigate
Prime Contractor for the Mogami frigates, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, arranged a colourful launch ceremony in Nagasaki for the new ship Nagara. A total of 24 Mogami frigates will be constructed with the final 12 in an upgraded configuration.
Would have been a great event to take part in. There are a number of articles going around about the Mogami at the moment so my perspective there is very much a sales pitch taking place.
Looking forward to hearing your opinion on the Mogami Kym. Is there any or much difference between the launched ship and the version(s) that the RAN is being offered?
The RAN version is about 10% larger and will have 32 VLS cells from the get go rather than 16 cells being retrofitted to the first 12 that are currently under construction.
I think you meant 32 VLS 👍
Excellent boat but the A210 MEKO Should not be under estimated. The A200 can not carry 32 x MK41 VLS so I reckon it’s only being considered because it’s much cheaper.
Thanks – I’ve corrected the number of VLS cells. Given the huge pressure the Defence budget is under, coming in at a lower price is no bad thing.
I’m not surprised that the DoD is being cagey about the Mogami bid. In its current form it meets criteria but MHI seem to be suggesting something different. 32 VLS instead of 16 and a bit Heavier than the 5,000 limit which would make it a derivative not yet built, something outside the Criteria.
I’ve completed a large article on the Mogami, which should be available online Monday morning. Yes, Japan is offering the larger upgraded Mogami, which is not yet in production. However, because of the completely ridiculous secret Australian process it is impossible for Japan to offer anything else. The basic Mogami will soon be out of production. Australia wants the first ship in 2029, so the RAN frigate will have to be launched in 2028. The only ship to be launched in 2028 will be one of the new series. It would be ridiculous for Japan to go backwards and start building 3 original Mogamis just for Australia when the entire production process is now geared up for the new ships. This ridiculous situation is entirely of Australia’s making – and, yes, the DoD want to keep it completely secret so the general public never learn of the level of utter stupidity around this project.
